Want to pick up a perfume ? Here are some tips :

There are multiple classification systems for perfumes, but most of them are centered around 5 distinct groups:

Floral
Oriented
Woody
Aromatic/Fougรจre
Fresh

Within each of them are subgroups. Some perfumes are a combination of groups and the Fragrance wheel developed by Michael Edwards in 1983 is the newest classification system.

The wheel shows how the scents are connected.

Main Group: FLORAL

Sub Grp / Main Notes ingredients
Floral / Fresh-cut flowers
Soft Floral / Aldehydes and powdery notes
Floral Oriental / Orange blossoms and sweet spices

Main Group : ORIENTAL

Sub Group / Main Notes Ingredients
Soft Oriental / Incense and amber
Oriental / Oriental resins and vanilla
Woody Oriental / Sandalwood and patchouli

Main Group : WOODY

Sub Group / Main Notes Ingredients
Woods / Aromatic woods and vetiver 
Mossy Woods / Oakmoss and amber
Dry Woods / Dry woods and leather

Main Group : AROMATIC

Sub Group / Main Notes Ingredients
Aromatic Fougere / Lavender and aromatic herbs

Main Group : FRESH

Sub Grp / Mian Note Ingredients
Citrus / Bergamot and citrus oils
Fruity / Berries and non-citrus fruit
Green / Galbanum and green notes
Water / Marine and aquatic notes
