The image consulting industry first started in the late 1970's and the early 1980's. What was designed solely for politicians or celebrities has now evolved into something much more. In today's 21st century, image culture is very complex and questions are always arising about what to wear at the right time or how to depict confidence through body language. For those who have a hard time discerning appropriate attire for certain situations, or how to place a positive image through posture and gestures, they can seek advice through an "image consultant".
John Molly's book "Dress For Success" gained immense popularity and momentum throughout the world. At the same time women were also entering the corporate world and they felt that image mattered to a great extent and so they started investing money in their appearance. In 1990's, the high-tech companies introduced a trend in the dress code known as "business dress". Eventually it was seen that the "business dress" went from formal to casual. Thus, Image Consultant was essential to introduce dress codes and standards. Today, the demand for quality image consultants has risen to another level as new markets have emerged. The definition of image consulting has broadened beyond "makeovers" including behaviour, civility and etiquette, body language, interview skills, communication, presentation and personal branding as well.
